Symbols

The symbol in chapters 2 and 7 of the great Gatsby I have found is that tj ekelburge represents the "big brother" of the story. Because when myrtle's husband finds the pearl necklace on her, he says "you may fool me, but you don't fool God! God sees everything!" When he says that I assume he's referring to tj ekelburge's presents. by that I mean the poster that was described in chapter 2. And when myrtle was hit by the vehicle, the poster of tj ekelburge was across from where myrtle was hit.

  1. The idea of a big brother almost suggests a sort of sentimentality towards what is going on, an emotional tie. Do you think that the eyes could be a big brother figure even though the emotional tie was one way? I think that his eyes more represented the idea of a god, because god is believed to be everywhere at once and followers have a emotional connection to him that they do not receive back in any sort of measurable form. As a result, do you think the tj eckleberg's eyes could represent God considering how the quote ties in to that idea, the one way emotional connection people have to the eyes, and how they're ever present throughout all important (in my opinion) scenes within the novel? Why or why not?
